India, April 4 -- The CBSE has announced the introduction of Konkani as a Class 9 subject starting from the 2026-27 academic session. The move will see Konkani added alongside other regional languages such as Dogri, Maithili, and Santali, completing the board's list of 22 scheduled languages. As part of the updated curriculum, students will be required to study at least two Indian languages from Class 6 onwards. The board also plans to make a third language compulsory in Class 10 board exams by 2031, aiming to strengthen multilingual learning among students across India.
