Breast, colon cancer cases rising in Goa, says study

Following the re cent passing of Taleigao MLA Jennifer Monserrate after a prolonged bat tle with cancer, there's a renewed focus on the growing cancer burden in Goa. Goa is witnessing a worrying rise in cancer cases, with breast and co lon cancers emerging as the two most commonly diag nosed malignancies, while experts have flagged the unusually high incidence of colon cancer in the State as a trend that differs sharply from the national pattern. A five-year retrospective study conducted by Health way Hospital, Panjim, ana lysing 570 cancer cases between 2019 and 2024, found that breast cancer accounted for 26.85 per cent of all cases, followed by colon cancer at 19.09 per cent.
