Goa, April 8 -- In a significant development, the Bombay High Court has cancelled the Ponda by-election in Goa, which was scheduled to be held on April 9.

The court upheld the contention of the petitioners that the elected MLA would not be able to complete the mandatory minimum tenure of one year, as required under the law. Accepting this argument, the court ruled against proceeding with the bypoll.

The court also rejected a request by the Election Commission of India to stay the order, effectively halting the election process.

The ruling is expected to have significant political and administrative implications, as preparations for the by-election had already been underway.
