India, April 1 -- A speedboat carrying Afghan migrants capsized in rough Aegean waters off Turkey's Bodrum coast on Wednesday, killing 19 people, including a baby. The vessel, packed with dozens fleeing to Europe, ignored coastguard warnings and accelerated to evade capture near Greece's Kos island, just 20 km away.
In choppy seas, the boat took on water and overturned. Turkish Coast Guard teams from Izmir, aided by helicopter, rescued 21 survivors and recovered 18 bodies initially. One migrant later died in hospital, leaving at least one person missing. Mugla Governor Idris Akbiyik confirmed all victims were Afghan, with search efforts ongoing near popular islands like Kalymnos, Leros, and Symi.
