A FALLING BIRTH RATE: Young Goans say "not yet" to parenthood

Goa has recorded the lowest birth rate in India and a low total fertility rate according to data released by the Sample Registration System (SRS). Much explanation is not required, as such information clearly shows where the state stands in terms of its future. Goa records a crude birth rate of about 10.8 births per 1,000 population, considerably lower than the national average of more than 18 births per 1,000. This is the lowest crude birth rate among all Indian states and Union Territories. The state's Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has declined to roughly 1.3, which is significantly below the replacement level fertility rate of 2.1 needed to sustain a stable population over time.
