India, June 4 -- Bulgaria's mortality rate eased in 2023, continuing a decline from the elevated levels recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to historical deaths-per-capita data.
Post-Pandemic Decline Continues
The country's death rate stood at 15.7 deaths per 1,000 people in 2023, down from 18.4 in 2022 and well below the pandemic peak of 22.9 recorded in 2021. The 2020 rate was 19.0 deaths per 1,000 people.
Long-Term Upward Trend
Data show that Bulgaria's mortality rate was significantly lower during the 1960s, fluctuating between 7.9 and 9.0 deaths per 1,000 people. The rate gradually increased over subsequent decades, reaching double-digit levels and continuing to climb through the 2000s and 2010s.
