Historic Declines from the 1960s In 1960, the death rate stood at 9.155 per 1,000 persons. The country experienced a consistent downward trend throughout that decade, with the rate dropping to 7.672 in 1965 and further to 6.212 by 1970. This era of improvement saw the mortality rate fall by nearly 3 points in only ten years.
