COLOMBO, June 2 -- The government has approved an ambitious urban development program aimed at transforming key cities across Sri Lanka into model urban centres, highlighting their unique heritage, cultural identity and tourism potential.

Cabinet approval was granted for a special work plan jointly proposed by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, with the objective of enhancing the international appeal of major Sri Lankan cities and promoting them among both local and foreign tourists.

Under the 2026 Budget, Rs 1.3 billion has been allocated to the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development for city enhancement and tourism-oriented urban development initiatives.
