India, Aug. 18 -- Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has taken an unusual route to recreate the ancient world, using a fully functional Viking longship to portray the vessel of Greek hero Odysseus.
A Viking ship in a Greek epic
The ship featured in the film is the Draken Harald Harfagre, a 115-foot wooden longship built using traditional Viking-inspired techniques. Though the vessel belongs to a much later historical period than the world described in Homer's epic, Nolan chose it for its ability to withstand real ocean conditions.
The decision reflects Nolan's preference for practical filmmaking. Rather than relying entirely on computer-generated imagery, the production placed actors aboard a working ship while filming maritime sequences.
