India, Oct. 1 -- Alejandro G. Inarritu's Digger evolved for almost a decade as real-world events repeatedly changed the filmmaker's approach to the story, eventually inspiring an unusual theatrical structure for Tom Cruise's latest film.

Story began in 2017

Inarritu started developing Digger with Mexican writer Sabina Berman in 2017. The director said the screenplay was difficult to keep fixed because reality continually overtook the fictional world they were creating, forcing them to rethink the narrative over the years.
