Gorkha, Oct. 11 -- A sudden surge in the Budhi Gandaki river swept away seven houses in Jagat, in northern Gorkha, on Sunday morning, prompting residents and tourists to flee to safety.

Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, Gorkha's chief district officer, said preliminary reports indicated that a landslide had occurred above Siuribas in Chumnubri Rural Municipality.

"The report is that five to seven houses in the riverbed at Jagat have been swept away," Mishra told Kantipur. "No casualties have been reported."

The river's flow rose sharply after a sudden surge in the Ugylung and Syar streams, which feed into the Budhi Gandaki. Residents in Chumnubri Rural Municipality-6 and 7 said they heard loud roaring sounds from around 4am on Sunday.
