Jammu, April 12 -- The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, a pivotal event in India's struggle for independence, occurred on April 13, 1919, in Amritsar, Punjab. On that day, British troops led by Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer opened fire on a crowd of unarmed Indians gathered at Jallianwala Bagh, killing hundreds and injuring many more. The crowd had assembled to protest the Rowlatt Act, a law that allowed the British to arrest and detain Indians without trial, and to demand the release of two nationalist leaders, Satyapal and Saifuddin Kitchlew.
