NEW DELHI, July 2 -- The railway ministry on Thursday approved the replacement of relay-based interlocking with advanced electronic interlocking at 20 locations in Malda division of the Eastern Railway at a cost of Rs 274 crore.

"It is a major step towards strengthening railway safety and modernising signalling infrastructure," a senior railway official said.

According to the ministry, the project will replace the existing relay room or panel interlocking system with electronic interlocking (EI) at 18 railway stations and two intermediate block signalling (IBS) locations situated on high utilisation network (HUN) routes of the Eastern Railway.
