Jammu, April 10 -- Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, a decorated hero of the Kargil War and a recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra, passed away suddenly in Leh, leaving behind a legacy of courage, leadership and distinguished service to the nation.

Widely revered for his role during the Kargil conflict, Col. Wangchuk had led a team of 40 soldiers in a daring high-altitude operation, successfully evicting 135 Pakistani troops in a fierce three-day battle fought under extreme conditions, including deep snow and sub-zero temperatures. The mission, conducted at an altitude of nearly 18,000 feet, is regarded as one of the earliest significant successes for Indian forces during the war.
