India, Oct. 2 -- West Bengal is set to reintroduce a tiger to Buxa Tiger Reserve, in an attempt to establish a population outside the Sundarbans.

A tigress aged more than three years has been brought from Bihar's Valmiki Tiger Reserve and will initially be kept in a 2.3-hectare enclosure to acclimatise.

The state plans to introduce another two to three tigers in phases, while the animal will be radio-collared and monitored after release.

Wildlife experts have raised concerns over Buxa's prey base, habitat quality, human activity and the presence of villages within the reserve's core area.

Forest officials say preparations for the reintroduction have been under way for eight years and are confident the programme can succeed.
