India, Sept. 2 -- At the ICSE 2026 conference in New Delhi, CSE chief Sunita Narain linked Nepal's flash flood to decades of hubristic engineering that tried to bend rivers and mountains to human will.

Warning that India now faces extreme weather almost daily and that the Yamuna is "scientifically dead," she urged abandoning incremental fixes in favour of systemic change in transport, planning and climate policy.

The Nepal disaster is a result of decades of an engineering mindset that assumed rivers and mountains could be re-engineered at will, Sunita Narain, Director General, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), said on September 2, 2026.
