Make the Himalaya a 'no-go zone' for high-risk mega infrastructures: Civil society coalition
India, Sept. 7 -- A coalition of 60 civil society groups under the People for Himalaya campaign has urged that high-altitude and trans-Himalayan regions be declared no-go zones for high-risk mega infrastructure after the deadly August 26, 2026 ice-rock avalanche in Nepal.
The statement demands bans on large dams in sensitive areas, strict tourism and urbanisation controls, community-led recovery, worker protections and a climate liability framework.
An umbrella grouping of civil society organisations has demanded that the Himalayas be made a 'no-go zone' for high-risk mega infrastructures in the wake of the ice-rock avalanche in Nepal on August 26, 2026, that has claimed thousands of lives, with hundreds unaccounted for.
