India, Sept. 30 -- Maharashtra has earmarked Rs 6,728 crore for rural employment and livelihood support as drought affects 265 of the state's 358 tehsils.

The state recorded an 18% rainfall deficit, raising concerns over water availability, agricultural livelihoods and rural employment.

Demand for work under the Employment Guarantee Scheme rose from 402,493 households in July to 493,169 in September.

The government has identified 375 types of work, including water conservation, irrigation and rural infrastructure projects.

Authorities are considering a 10% cut in urban water supplies and restrictions in rural areas, while a committee will assess possible fodder shortages.
