India on e-wheels: Market, not government, is pushing e-mobility surge in West Bengal
India, Aug. 26 -- Over the past few years, West Bengal's e-mobility transition has been moving in opposite directions. The new state government, however, is promising to undertake course correction.
West Bengal was among the pioneer states in India as far as electric buses (e-buses) are concerned. Eighty buses were introduced in Kolkata in 2019. That programme though has stumbled, with hardly 40 new buses being added over the last seven years. This is mainly due to inconsistent government policy.
