India, Sept. 21 -- The rupee strengthened 24 paise to 95.72 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday, supported by softer crude oil prices and a positive trend in domestic equities.

Forex traders said gains in Indian equities and improved foreign fund sentiment supported the rupee, although persistent dollar demand from oil importers and overall strength in the US Dollar Index limited the currency's gains.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 95.86 against the US dollar before rising to 95.72, marking a 24-paise gain from its previous close.
