India, Oct. 9 -- The Indian rupee appreciated 23 paise to 96.65 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday, supported by a slight weakening of the greenback and suspected intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Forex traders said the rupee opened higher as the dollar index eased to around 102, while Brent crude prices declined to USD 103.39 per barrel following US President Donald Trump's remarks that an attack on Iran would take place only after the midterm elections.

However, persistent geopolitical uncertainties and continued foreign fund outflows remain key headwinds for the domestic currency, limiting its recovery.
