India, April 15 -- The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced amendments to streamline the levy of fees on overloaded vehicles on national highways, with the new rules coming into effect from April 15, 2026.

Under the revised framework, vehicles exceeding the permissible gross vehicle weight will be charged based on the extent of overloading: no fee for up to 10% excess load, double the base toll for 10–40% excess, and four times the base rate for over 40%.

The rules mandate the use of certified weighing systems at toll plazas to determine overloading. In the absence of such facilities, no overload charges will be applied.
