Indian Railways freight loading rises 9% to 141.3 MT in July

India, Aug. 3 -- Indian Railways reported a 9% year-on-year increase in freight loading to 141.3 million tonnes (MT) in July 2026, driven by higher transportation of key commodities and improved operational efficiency.

Loading of major commodities registered strong growth, with Iron Ore up 22.2%, Coal up 11.5%, Food Grains up 11.5%, and Fertilisers up 12%. Coal supplies to thermal power plants also increased 20% compared with the same month last year.

Higher freight movement helped generate an additional Rs 1,137 crore in freight revenue, marking an 8% year-on-year increase. Meanwhile, passenger traffic also improved, with 63.35 crore passengers travelling by rail in July, compared with 62.19 crore in the corresponding month last year.
