India, Sept. 28 -- Indian Railways has approved the 6-km Barbil-Bolanikhadan doubling project of South Eastern Railway at a completion cost of Rs 122 crore, aimed at strengthening rail infrastructure on a key mineral freight corridor.

The project is expected to facilitate an additional 8.9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight traffic once commissioned and help reduce delays to freight trains.

The Barbil-Bolanikhadan section currently operates as a single-line route and handles around 9 MTPA of traffic, including about six loaded iron ore rakes per day. The route primarily carries high-grade iron ore and pellets from SAIL's Bolani mines and private sidings to steel plants and ports.
