India, July 28 -- Indian Railways has successfully operated the first direct commercial container freight train from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar Customs Yard, Nepal, marking a major milestone in cross-border rail connectivity between the two countries.
The train, comprising 40 wagons carrying a consignment of canola, completed its journey under the revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol, enabling direct rail transportation of containerised cargo from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar without transshipment at the border.
The new arrangement is expected to reduce transit time, lower logistics costs, minimise cargo handling, and improve the efficiency and reliability of cross-border trade. It follows the inauguration of the Jogbani-Biratnagar bro...
