It relied on trust. A voice that sounded like your grandson. A video call with your company's CFO. A UPI request from what looked like your bank.

According to government data reported through India's National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and cited by Kaval Research in March 2026, Indians lost at least Rs 22,495 crore to cyber fraud in 2025, and that is only the reported figure. According to the same report, 51percent of UPI fraud victims never reported the incident at all.
