India, April 28 -- Reliance Industries Limited is planning to invest around USD 17 billion (Rs 1.6 lakh crore) into a 1.5 GW data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam. A phased rollout with 300 acres in the first stage and the rest later. A mix of data centre infrastructure, cable landing, and even a desalination plant.

Reliance is not just building computing capacity; it is building control over power. The company plans a captive renewable energy system with a 9,000 MW-peak solar capacity. That is not a side addition. That is the backbone.

AI data centres are not limited by servers anymore. They are limited by energy. And by locking in its own energy supply, Reliance is solving the biggest constraint before it becomes a problem.
