India, July 20 -- Every time a Chinese lab ships a capable model, the financial press reaches for the same headline: Nvidia's (NVDA) moat is under siege. It happened with DeepSeek in January 2025. It happened again in mid-July 2026, when Moonshot AI released Kimi K3.
The instinct to treat this as "DeepSeek again" is understandable, but it undersells what K3 actually changes. The real story isn't that Wall Street panicked about the wrong chip - it's that China is narrowing the model-capability gap while operating under hardware constraints, and that has consequences for model pricing, inference deployment, hardware diversification, and the effectiveness of U.S. export controls.
