Pakistan, July 1 -- Serena Williams made an emotional return to Wimbledon singles after a four-year absence but suffered a 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3 first-round defeat to Australia's Maya Joint. The 44-year-old wildcard missed the opportunity to become the oldest woman since Martina Navratilova in 2004 to win a singles match at the All England Club, although she praised the warm reception from supporters.
Joint, who is only 20 years old, produced the biggest victory of her career by overcoming one of tennis' greatest champions on Centre Court.
