Pakistan, Aug. 9 -- Pakistan played an important diplomatic role in reducing tensions between the United States and Iran and bringing both sides to the negotiating table during a period of serious conflict. Islamabad facilitated communication when tensions had sharply increased and both countries had suffered losses. Moreover, senior American and Iranian officials held direct talks in Islamabad, marking their highest-level direct contact since 1979. Pakistan's geographic position and working relations with Washington and Tehran gave it a valuable position to support the negotiations.
