Pakistan, Oct. 8 -- NASA is preparing to investigate a deep pit on the Moon that could lead to an underground lava tube. The Marius Hills pit is about 34 metres deep.

The space plans to send GIMLI, or Geophysical Instruments for Marius Lunar pit Investigation, to study the feature. Scientists want to determine whether the pit connects to a larger underground space.

Researchers believe lunar pits may be skylights formed when the roofs of ancient lava tubes collapsed. If confirmed, these structures could provide valuable information about the Moon's volcanic history.
