New Delhi, Sept. 2 -- India faces strong opposition over proposed food warning labels from health experts and major food companies. Activists say the plan has loopholes, while businesses fear stricter rules could flag many products.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India proposed a red hexagonal label last week. The warning would apply when products exceed limits in two of three nutrients. These nutrients include added sugar, salt and saturated fat.

Health experts have raised concerns about the proposed two-nutrient threshold. They say products high in only one nutrient could avoid warning labels. Professor Barry Popkin called the approach ineffective compared with systems used in other countries.
