Houthis deny plans to charge Red Sea transit feesPublished on: August 1, 2026 7:04 PM
Pakistan, Aug. 1 -- Yemen's Houthi-linked maritime coordination body has denied reports that it plans to impose fees on commercial ships using the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Officials said no such decision has been made and that transit through the strategic waterway remains free. The clarification follows recent reports of possible new shipping charges.
The Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center (HOCC) said its safe transit service remains voluntary and free of charge. It also warned that anyone demanding payment for passage does not represent Yemen or the HOCC. According to the statement, shipping companies should not make payments to unauthorized individuals.
