Pakistan, Sept. 12 -- The Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded more than 7,000 Ebola cases in its worst outbreak of the disease. Congolese authorities reported 7,022 cases since the epidemic began.

The outbreak has killed 3,398 people, while 1,671 patients have recovered. Authorities officially detected the outbreak in mid-May after the disease had likely spread for weeks.

The epidemic began in northeastern Ituri province before reaching other regions. The affected areas include remote and conflict-hit regions with weak state presence and limited health infrastructure.
