Pakistan, Sept. 7 -- The appointment of Pakistan's Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) remains pending as consultations have yet to begin. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai have not started formal discussions. Sources said the delay also affects two vacant Election Commission seats.

Achakzai sent a letter to the prime minister last month seeking consultations. However, the prime minister has not yet responded to the letter. A government delegation led by Adviser Rana Sanaullah also met with the opposition leader. Despite the meeting, formal consultations have not started.
