Pakistan, Sept. 10 -- Barry Melrose, the former NHL player and coach who became a beloved hockey broadcaster, died on Wednesday, September 9, at age 70. His wife, Cindy, confirmed his death to longtime ESPN colleague Steve Levy. Melrose had battled Parkinson's disease since receiving his diagnosis in 2023.

Melrose stepped away from broadcasting after the diagnosis, ending a career that spanned more than 25 years. He became widely known for his sharp humour, colourful suits, distinctive goatee and signature slicked-back hair and mullet. His unique personality helped make him one of the most recognisable figures among hockey fans worldwide.
