Pakistan, June 9 -- A mortar shell explosion in Afghanistan's Paktika province killed at least seven people, including five children. The incident occurred when the shell exploded during an attempt to break it apart. It matters as it highlights ongoing risks from unexploded ordnance in the region.

According to Afghan media reports, the blast took place after the device was recovered from a waste site. Police officials said the explosion occurred while individuals were trying to dismantle the shell. Four other children were also injured in the incident.
