KIGOMA, Aug. 17 -- A new 53bn/- passenger berth at Kigoma Port is expected to transform water transport and stimulate trade across the Lake Tanganyika corridor.

The Minister for Transport Prof Makame Mbarawa made the statement when inspecting construction progress of the new berth, which is being built through cooperation between the government of Tanzania and Japan under a grant arrangement. Its construction began in June 2025.

Speaking at the port, Prof Mbarawa said the project would improve the movement of passengers and cargo, enhance safety in water transport and spur economic activities in Kigoma, Katavi and Rukwa regions, as well as neighbouring countries.
