MWANZA, Feb. 27 -- THE National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), in collaboration with other health-sector partners, has launched a new schistosomiasis (bilharzia) medicine for young children under the STEPPs project.

Speaking at the launch recently in Mwanza City, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Mr Seif Shekhalage said that although medicines for the disease have existed for many years, they have not adequately addressed the needs of children under five.

He commended the researchers for their progress and urged them to move to the next phase to enhance the medicines effectiveness while keeping treatment affordable and accessible to communities.
