Sri Lanka, July 21 -- A multi-purpose Assistant attached to the Bakamuna Wildlife Office, sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a wild elephant, while repairing an electric fence near the Mahadaththawa Tank in Bakamuna, Polonnaruwa, on Saturday (19).

The injured officer has been identified as Lalith Prasanna Kumara Herath.

According to reports, a team of Wildlife Officers led by Assistant Wildlife Ranger J.C.C. Gayan was carrying out repairs to an electric fence in the Puwakgaha Ulpatha area, when a wild elephant, which had been hiding inside the nearby forest, suddenly charged at them.

While the other Wildlife Officers managed to escape to safety, Herath was caught in the elephant's attack and suffered severe injuries.
