Sri Lanka, April 28 -- The Locomotive Engine Drivers' Union (LEDU) has announced that train drivers are withdrawing from operating locomotives with technical defects.

Speaking on the matter, the Union's Convener Indika Dodangoda stated that drivers will also strictly adhere to prescribed speed limits during operations. He noted that these measures are likely to result in significant train delays.

He said authorities have been briefed periodically regarding the existing technical deficiencies.

The move follows the derailment of the Sagarika train on Friday (24), which caused severe inconvenience to passengers due to subsequent delays.
