Sri Lanka, Aug. 27 -- The Kandy Municipal Council's Solid Waste Management Department said 155 tonnes of waste was collected from the city of Kandy during only the first seven days of the Kandy Esala Perahera's street procession.
Kandy Municipal Commissioner Indika Abeysinghe said 16 tonnes of elephant dung alone was collected. She said 60 tonnes of food items for elephants, including kitul and jackfruit,14 tonnes of charcoal, 28 tonnes of waste food, 24 tonnes of mixed garbage and 12 tonnes of polythene have been removed.
Abeysinghe pointed out that despite advance notice, some people continue to dump non-biodegradable waste, including polythene and plastic bottles, in various places in the city.
