Southwest Monsoon brings strong winds, heavy rainfall and rough seas
Sri Lanka, June 30 -- Disaster Management Centre (DMC) Spokesperson and Assistant Director Pradeep Kodippili has urged the public, particularly fishing and maritime communities, to remain vigilant as the active Southwest Monsoon continues to bring strong winds, heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions to several parts of the island.
He said offshore sea areas from Kankesanturai to Pottuvil via Mannar, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota could experience gale-force winds of 50 to 60 kmph, making the seas extremely rough. In addition, swell waves between two and three metres are expected in the sea areas off the coast from Chilaw to Pottuvil, posing a significant threat to fishing and maritime operations.
