SriLanka, June 20 -- Sri Lanka yesterday welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the United States of America and Iran establishing an immediate ceasefire.

The Foreign Ministry in a release said that the ceasefire represents a significant step toward de-escalation and long-term regional and global stability, including through the re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz and providing for a framework for the continuity of negotiations.

"Sri Lanka strongly supports the peaceful resolution of disputes through diplomacy and remains optimistic that this step will foster sustainable peace across the region".
