Sri Lanka, May 18 -- The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued an advisory for severe lightning, valid from 12.00 noon today (18) until 11.30 p.m. tonight.

According to the Department of Meteorology, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Eastern Provinces, as well as in the Kurunegala District after 1.00 p.m.

The advisory also warns of temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. The overall risk level has been identified as moderate to high in affected areas.

The general public has been urged to take necessary precautions to minimise damages caused by lightning activity.
