Several districts hit by severe drought
Sri Lanka, Aug. 24 -- There is more than a 90 percent probability that the current El Nino conditions will develop into a strong El Nino event from September, according to the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).
Meanwhile, a Disaster Management Centre report issued yesterday (23) showed that 81,865 people from 25,628 families have been affected by drought conditions, with the Ratnapura, Ampara, Batticaloa, Moneragala, Badulla, Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts worst hit. Most affected people have been provided with drinking water, the report said.
