SriLanka, Sept. 10 -- NPP MP Chandana Suriyarachchi told Parliament yesterday that successive governments had spent Rs.8,777 million to run the office of Chef of Defence Staff (CDS) between 2010 and 2025.

Following the end of the civil conflict, the position has been deemed unnecessary in the current fiscal context.

"The government has focused on repealing the Chief of Defence Staff Act No.35 of 2009 with the aim of creating a more efficient, effective and modern system for the implementation of all military functions. From 2010 to 2025, the government has incurred an expenditure of Rs.8,777 million for this position and maintaining the office.
