Sri Lanka, June 16 -- The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to modernize 126 school hostels across the country during the 2026-2028 period at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,008 million, with the aim of improving living conditions and educational outcomes for resident students.

The decision was taken following concerns over the deteriorating condition of many hostel buildings, where maintenance and renovation work have remained limited. Authorities have identified deficiencies in physical infrastructure, sanitation, health, and safety facilities that negatively affect students' well-being and academic performance.
