Referendum, a must, to extend judges' retirement age - GL
Sri Lanka, Aug. 10 -- Former Justice Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris stated that the position of the Joint Opposition is that a referendum must be held on the extension of the retirement age of judges.
He said the responsibility of making the final decision on the matter should be entrusted to the public. He said the proposed constitutional amendment by the government to increase the retirement age of judges will compromise the independence of the Supreme Court.
He added that the Government's claim of taking this measure to expedite the resolution of pending Court cases is completely unacceptable.
