Sri Lanka, July 7 -- Protecting Sri Lanka's rainforests is essential not only for conserving biodiversity but also for ensuring the country's long-term economic growth, social well-being and environmental sustainability, speakers emphasized at an awareness programme held to mark International Rainforest Day.

The event, organised jointly by the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Chief Secretariat, the Planning Office and the National "Young Explorers" organization, was held at the Ratnapura Provincial Council Auditorium under the theme "The Forest Within You." It brought together journalists, environmentalists, teachers and school students to raise awareness of the critical role rainforests play in the nation's future.
